There are other homes along the beach but often you will the only ones around.
You are not completely off grid as we have mains electricty, modern appliances, bathrooms and great showers and we collect rain water by the gallon! We do however aim to keep our footprint small as best we can even though recycling facilities on the islands are limited.
Our mains electricity is pretty reliable but there are occasional short power cuts that require you to be patient, keep the fridge door closed as much as possible and remember the water pump wont work either. The engineers live on island and are always very swift to fix problems. Have water available to drink in the fridge at all times.
WIFI- is a work in progress and has been set back by the Hurricanes in 2017.Check with us before you go for an update. Mobile phone signal is good in most places including at the house.
It is hot and though the winds are cooling they are also dehydrating to make sure to drink plenty of water. If you feel thirsty your body is telling you something, take note and always take water/soft drink to the beach. Always were sunscreen and we suggest at least factor 15 or even higher to maximise the protection in the strong Caribbean sun. We all under estimate the heat due to the Trade Winds so take care especially at the very beginning and end of the day and the midday hours. Where a hat, take a scarf to protect your shoulders or chest as these areas really do get the full impact of the rays at any time.
The water is all collected from the roof and sits in a 15000 gallon tank in the centre of the house. Use it with care, its all you have other than bottled drinking water.
There are insects. Mosquitoes enjoy rainy days and still weather. Take precautions with insect repellent. Sand flys / or no see ums enjoy the same conditions. They are pretty much excluded by the screens but use the fams to move the air and on a really still day ensure that before dusk the apartment is closed and the air conditioning on if needed. We find simple Baby oil very good on the feet to stop them taking advantage of your open toed shoes and flip flops!
The beach is like all beaches world wide sometimes the end place for plastic. We pick it up as we walk the beach and then take it via the garbage to our local land fill tip in Bambarra where it is buried.
We seek to leave the place even more pristine than when we find it and we collect any buoys or pieces of drfitwood washed up as there is always a use for them somewhere!
Yes you are thirty miles and a 30 minute boat trip from Providenciales and the relative bustle of holidaymakers, beach life and a selection of restaurants but our apartment is designed to make the remote beachside paradise accessible and enjoyable. Whether you stay for a few days or a week time will stand still with only the tides and the stars to provide punctuation and routine.
